Can I say it was a dream of mine to make Guacamole at home?! Don’t get me wrong. This is one of THE easiest recipe that can be put together so easily. So why all the hype you ask? The hype is not about the recipe but finding avocados in my part of the world. During the one occasion I found a couple of avocados, there were super raw – bright green in color. For the naïve me who did not know what to do, I let them sit for a couple of days and then my excitement got better of me. I cut them open too early for there was a bad taste as soon as I had some. I kept wondering what went wrong and having spent a fortune on just a couple of avocados. Over the years, I have spotted them perfectly ripe in juice shops and I have almost been tempted to buy it from them 😀 Do you know that avocado is called as butter fruit? Interesting but apt given it is the only fruit to contain fat (adds to good cholesterol of course).
Now, I not only find good avocados (of course at a very steep price) but know the trick to ripen them faster and better. All I had to do was put the avocados along with a ripe banana and in a few days, they start to turn brown and give away to a thumb press. If banana is not an option, just wrap them up in newspaper and put them in a warm spot – I use my kitchen counter. Now going over to the recipe – I don’t know if there can be a simpler recipe. The internet is swarming with different guacamole recipes but the base ingredients are the same. Avocado, Onion, Tomato, Olive Oil, Coriander Leaves, Red Chillies and Lemon Juice. Enjoy it in a wrap or a spread or just as it is like me 😀
To make Guacamole
What I used –
- Ripe Avocado, 1 large
- Onion, 1 small
- Ripe Tomato, 1 small
- Cilantro/Coriander Leaves, as required
- Lemon Juice, 2-3 tbsp
- Salt, as required
- Fresh Red Chillies, 1 or 2 (as required/optional)
- Olive Oil, 1 tbsp
How I made –
1. In bowl, scoop out the avocado and gently mash it with a spoon. Make sure the avocado is not completely mashed but there are a few smaller chunks. Add lemon juice and mix well.
2. Add finely chopped onions and tomatoes. Mix well. Add finely chopped coriander leaves.
3. Add salt as required and finely chopped red chillies. Mix everything well and finally pour over the olive oil.
4. Serve as a spread or in a wrap or as a simple creamy dip/sauce along with tortillas/nachos/chips/bread.
- Ripe avocado once cut will be very easy to scoop out the pulp using a spoon.
- Don’t over-mash the avocado as it may lose its texture.
- Adding lemon juice will help reduce oxidation on avocado, so add it immediately after mashing the avocado.
- The amount of onions/tomatoes and cilantro is as per preference.
- Red chillies are optional.
