After posting a couple of sweet recipes, I am sharing a quick and easy side dish that goes really well with Idli, Dosa, Chapati or even Poori. Kumbakonam Kadappa is a popular recipe coming from South Tamilnadu region Kumbakonam and hence the name. Honestly speaking, I have never heard or tasted this recipe growing up in Chennai, although I call myself a proud Tamil. Thanks to Instagram and the many wonderful friends I have made there, I get exposed to a different cuisines, recipes lost in time, recipes that have been guarded secrets of families and lot more. I got introduced to this recipe that way and ever since I have wanted to try it.
Kumbakonam Kadappa is a gravy recipe that has boiled potatoes, cooked moong dal along with a coconut-based masala paste. It is very unique that it is neither sambar nor potato masala. It is thicker in consistency than moong dal sambar and at the same time, with the coconut paste it is very flavorful. It is very subtly spiced with only green chillies used in the ground masala. As I was checking for an authentic version of this recipe, I stumbled upon this Youtube channel where an elderly aunty shared her family recipe – I immediately loved it.
I served this Kumbakonam Kadappa as a side dish for some fluffy soft idlis and it got me a lot of accolades from the family. When I make something, I usually make more than few servings so that I could see how it fares up after a while. The leftover was served up during dinner with some crispy dosas and chapatis, it was delicious. The best part about this recipe is that it is very easy and quick to make!

Kumbakonam Kadappa | Kadapa Recipe
Measurements1 cup = 250ml, 1 tbsp = 15ml, 1 tsp = 5ml
- 1/3 cup Cooked Moong Dal (3 tbsp of Moong Dal cooked)
- 1 Large Potato Boiled
- 1 Large Onion Finely Chopped
- 2 Medium Tomatoes Finely Chopped
- 3-4 Garlic Pods Finely Chopped
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 2 tsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1/8 tsp Asafoetida
- Few Fresh Curry Leaves
- Salt as needed
- Water as needed
- 1/2 cup Grated Coconut
- 1 tbsp Fried Gram
- 1 tsp Poppy Seeds
- 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
- 2-3 Green Chillies
- Water as needed
- In a thick bottomed pan, heat oil. Add mustard and cumin seeds, as they begin to pop up add fresh curry leaves and chopped garlic. Cook for a few seconds.
- Add finely chopped onions and fry until translucent.
- Next add finely chopped tomatoes and cook until mushy. And then add turmeric powder.
- Add chopped boiled potatoes.
- Cook everything together for 3-4 mins.
- Meanwhile, add all the ingredients under masala paste and grind into a smooth paste.
- Add this paste to the cooked onion, tomatoes and potatoes.
- Add 1/2 cup of water and cook the masala paste for 3-4 mins. Then add cooked moong dal.
- Cook the Kadapa until it begins to boil and comes together. Remove from heat.
- Serve it hot with idli, dosa or chapati or poori.

7. Add this paste to the cooked onion, tomatoes and potatoes in the pan.
8. Add 1/2 cup of water and cook the masala paste for 3-4 mins. Then add cooked moong dal.
9. Cook the Kadapa until it begins to boil and comes together. Remove from heat.
- I just cooked both potatoes and moong dal in two different containers in the same pressure cooker.
- Adjust spices as per preference.
- This thickens up after cooling down, so add some water as needed and heat it up before serving.
