Long ago when I posted my Filter Coffee recipe, I had talked about my love for coffee and how I acquired a taste for it over the years. And if anyone of you remember, I also talked about how I cant stand tea and it is not something I enjoy at all. Well, here is the news – I am now a proper tea convert! Just like the coffee, I seemed to have acquired a taste for tea, especially the strong Adrak wali Chai or the Indian Ginger tea.
It all started one weekend when I down with flu and wanted something soothing to comfort myself. The husband offered to make some tea, which kind of startled me. To be honest, I stock tea powder at home only to offer to our guests and have never made a cuppa for us in all these years. Just out of curiosity, I let him make tea and to say that my mind was blown would be an understatement. That cup of Ginger Tea was liquid gold. And I am hooked on to it forever 🙂 It is now our weekend ritual to make a nice cup of this Ginger Tea and unwind. It is strange how two things I never liked growing up create this magic and I am in love with it now!
Full disclaimer, the husband makes the best ginger tea between the two of us and I clicked the preparation photos while he was in action. This version of Adrak Ki Chai (Indian ginger tea) has a strong ginger flavor and is slow boiled for a long time to infuse the flavors of tea and ginger together into milk. Also, I served these in traditional Kulhads or earthen pots and it tastes way better that way. For these cold winter mornings, there is nothing better than a hot cup of soothing ginger tea! How to make Adrak Chai | Indian Ginger Tea –
Detailed step-wise picture recipe of making Adrak Chai | Indian Ginger Tea –
1. Wash and peel off the skin from ginger. Crush it well and add it to half cup of water. Let it simmer for 1-2 mins on low heat.
2. Add the tea powder and let this simmer on low heat for 5-6 mins until half of the water evaporates.
3. As the mixture boils, flavors of ginger and tea powder are released and the water turns a deep brown.
4. Add 2 cups of milk and mix well.
5. Let this boil on low heat for 6-7 mins. If the tea begins to boil, stir quickly using a spoon and continue simmering for another 3-4 mins.
6. Simmering makes the tea strong and helps develop flavor. Finally add sugar and mix well.
7. Strain off the tea onto serving cups. If desired, swish the tea from one cup to another quickly until it is frothy.
8. Serve hot with snacks of your choice.
- Adjust the quantity of ginger as per the flavor desired. Use only an inch of ginger for mild flavor.
- Adjust sugar as per sweetness desired.
- Always boil the tea on low heat for a longer time to develop the right taste.
