Traditionally Kurkure Chana Namkeen is deep-fried in oil until crispy & golden, which can make it greasy and oily. With the help of the air fryer, all it takes is less than 2 teaspoons to oil to make a delicious tea-time snack like crispy roasted air fryer chickpeas.
To make this simple but super crispy roasted chana in air fryer, all you need is pressure-cooked Kabuli chana or garbanzo beans or chickpeas. This recipe is highly customizable with the addition of different spice powders and flavor combinations. Also, checkout other Air fryer recipes and low-calorie snack recipes.
Key Ingredients
Kabuli Chana or Chickpeas are the main ingredient to make this low calorie roasted chana recipe. It is a must to soak the chana overnight or for 8 hours atleast before pressure cooking it until soft. We will drain off the water and use the boiled chana coated in oil to air fry.
For a cup of chana, we will use only 1.5 teaspoons of Oil – any type of oil works. This is needed to make the chana crispy but not too dry at the same time.
Flavoring can be made with any spice powders as preferred and in this recipe, I have kept it simple by using Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder & Chaat Masala Powder. I do not add additional salt chaat masala has black salt in it. Other flavor combinations can also be used.

Tips & Important Notes for Making Crispy Roasted Chana in Air Fryer
Crispy Roasted Air Fryer Chickpeas is a simple, beginner-friendly recipe that does not take much time or effort to get done. Follow the below tips & notes to make it perfectly.
Always soak the chickpeas/chana for 8hrs or overnight, drain off the water and pressure cook with enough water for 2-3 whistles on medium flame. Boiled chana should be soft and easily mashable, to get perfect crunchy golden roasted chana.
Pre-heat the air fryer at 200°C for 10 mins at least. This is a must to get the chana roasted right to the perfect color & texture.
To remove the moisture, we will air fry the chana at 200°C for 6-7 mins and then reduce the temperature to 160°C, roast for 10-12 mins. Slow roasting at lower temperature brings out the right level of crispness.
The flavorings & spice powders set well when added to the roasted chana. If added to the chana before roasting, there is a chance for the spice powders to burn or change color leading to less appetizing results.
The spice powders should be added immediately after removing the chana from air fryer for it to be coated properly.
Substitutions & Variations
The choice powders and flavoring additions are as per personal preferences. Garam Masala Powder, Cumin Powder, Black Salt, Lemon Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Pepper Powder, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Curry Powder – any of these can be added as preferred.
This recipe works well with Kabuli Chana but Kaala Chana or brown chana can also be used. Apart from making chana namkeen, this recipe can also be made with Boiled Peas, Moong Dal or Chana Dal too.
If you do not have an Air Fryer, this recipe also works in an OTG/convection oven. Spread the chana evenly on the tray and follow the same steps. Adjust the baking time as needed to get the chana crisped up, it will not as quick as an air fryer.
Storing & Serving Suggestions
Low Calorie Kurkure Chana Namkeen is best served with a cup of hot tea or coffee as an evening snack. It is healthier than store-bought munchies as there is very little oil used. As the roasted chana comes to room temperature, store it in an airtight container for up to two weeks. This recipe becomes all the easier if you have frozen boiled chana handy, just thaw it before use.
